Muscovy ducks are one of the few breeds that are not mallard-derived. They are their own species and are closer related to a goose than they are a duck!
Muscovy are excellent ducks for the average backyard flock. There is no breed of duck that does a better job of hatching and raising their young. They can also fly quite well which enables them to better escape predators. They are actually considered large perching waterfowl. In addition, they are excellent foragers, eating larger amounts of grass than other types of domestic ducks. They are also calmer and quieter than other ducks, making quiet hissing and cooing sounds. Some people find the fact that Muscovies sing rather than quack.
Though many people say that chickens are easy to keep, the requirements for ducks are even simpler. All ducks need is a big enough body of water and a dry structure with some straw in it that they can be shut up in at night. Ducks don't need nesting boxes or roosting perches.
They are easy to sex as adults as the males tend to be much larger in size than the females. Males will average out to 12-20 (on the larger side) pounds while the females stay small, about 6-8 pounds.
The meat from a Muscovy is 98% fat free and not greasy like other duck meat, which makes it a healthy meal option. Many say that the breast meat is similar to a good sirloin steak.

Muscovy Ducklings are fast-growing, reaching up to 12 pounds in just 12 weeks. Domesticated Muscovy drakes (male Muscovy ducks) can grow to 15 pounds—that’s nearly twice the size of Muscovy hens.
Muscovies aren’t particular when it comes to their diet. They’ll eat small fish, termites, millipedes, small reptiles, slugs, insects (including flies and mosquitoes), grass, grain…and yes, even the plants you have growing in your garden.
Not a fan of flies? Or do you have flies invading your barns and barnyards? Muscovy Ducks have a voracious appetite for flies and mosquitoes, and in fact, have been documented to reduce the fly population in cow pens by up to 90 percent!
Muscovy Ducks are Best Suited for…properties no smaller than one-quarter acre. This will not only keep the area cleaner, the ducks will feel less stress—which enhances their relationships with the other ducks, increases egg production, and prevents bad habits like feather plucking.
As mentioned earlier, these ducks are ideal where insects are a problem. If you’re in search of meat ducks, Muscovies are great choices, since they produce meat that is 98% fat free and less greasy than other duck meat. In fact. Muscovy Ducks make up 90 percent of commercially produced duck meat. Their docile nature also makes them ideal companion animals.
The Temperament of Muscovy Ducks.
When you raise Muscovy ducklings with a hands-on approach, they are more likely to be agreeable to being handled when grown. Regardless of your level of interaction with these ducks, however, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better homesteading breed. Their peaceable nature makes them docile pets, and they can actually become quite attached to their handlers.
Muscovy Egg Production
When compared to their meat production, Muscovy Ducks are not champion egg producers—although they can lay up to 195 eggs per year, over a 40-week season, starting in the spring. Production can potentially be increased by introducing artificial light during the winter months, to increase the amount of “daylight” in their days.
The eggs of the Muscovy have a harder shell than those of most ducks and the eggs weigh nearly three ounces. That makes them jumbo-sized!
Time to Maturity for Muscovy Hens and Muscovy Drakes
Muscovy ducklings will start laying eggs when they’re about six months (or 25 weeks) old. They will continue to lay eggs for about three years—or longer if they’re fed a protein-rich diet. Their mating season typically begins in August and runs through May.
